Online poker is a game on both mobile and PC that’s not only increasing in popularity but also in difficulty. While some people are playing it for recreational and entertainment purposes, there are others who take it pretty seriously as well. The following article will talk about the basic rules of poker, as well as some tips when playing online poker for more than entertainment.

A Brief Look at the Rules of Online Poker

This will serve as a refresher for those who are already familiar with the basics. If you’re not quite confident in your knowledge of the rules yet, it’s probably best to observe a few games online before trying your hand in person.

Online poker games can be played with between 2 to 6 players. There are some variations that use the joker card as part of gameplay, while others still remove some of the lower-valued cards, giving more chances for a high-value winning hand. However, most game providers use a standard deck of 52 cards with the jokers removed. The Ace always has the highest value; Two is the lowest.

After the big and small blind bets are settled, each player receives two cards and the first round of betting begins. The dealer then deals the three shared cards in the middle and the second round of betting commences. Succeeding rounds proceed in the same manner until there are 5 shared cards. The remaining players (i.e. those who haven’t folded yet) then try and form the best five-card hand with a combination of the shared cards and one or both of their own.

In each betting round, players have four options:

  • Fold: surrender cards and forfeit their role in the current game.
  • Raise: increase the current bet to a higher amount (raising amount depends on the variation of poker being played).
  • Call: to bet the necessary amount to match the current bet.
  • Check: to take no action, whether to fold, raise, or call.

The betting round ends when either all players but one fold, or everybody checks.

After the last round of betting, the player with the best winning hand claims the pot. If there’s only one player left in the last betting round (i.e. all other players have folded), then this player is automatically the winner even if they don’t have a winning hand at all. After all, poker is a game of bluffs.

Tips to Win in Online Poker

Written below are what we consider to be the two most important rules when playing poker.

1. Play with a clear mind and a complete understanding of the risks.

It’s important to have a clear mind when playing online poker, especially if you have real money at stake. In doing so, you’ll ensure that you’re not distracted or making decisions based on emotions and your current mood.  Poker is both a game of chance and strategy and in this case, there’s always a chance that you won’t win – you have to play both the house and the others people in the game. It’s hard to determine who is a better player than who in a game of poker; there is only those who are more persistent and employ a better strategy. When you lose money once or a few times, that doesn’t mean you’re not ever going to win. You never know what could happen so you just need to remain positive and try not to let the loss affect you. Be patient – you’ll get your shining moment!

2. Always play with caution.

It’s okay to just “go with the flow” when you’re playing for fun and have to real money at risk. However, it’s best to exercise caution when playing with actual money. When your opponents are proving to be tough ones and you haven’t been able to win in a while, you should consider bowing out of the game. If you’re a beginner with a small budget, try playing easier tournaments with a smaller minimum bet. If you try to play with high rollers without enough experience, your pocket may not be able to keep up.

Again, poker is a card game that pits the player against player. That involves being able to read into your opponents’ moves – are they bluffing, or do they really have a good hand? As it’s all online, there’s no real need to practice your poker face. Experience in playing will help you to be a better judge of whether your cards are good enough to play, or if you should just fold. Just remember that there’s usually a time limit to make your move before the game forces you to fold.
